Luxor Gas Fireplaces

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
  1. What is a direct vent gas fireplace?

Answer:   All gas fireplaces need a constant supply of fresh air in order to operate. A direct vent fireplace is common referred to a balanced flue system, meaning the unit is completely sealed, through a vent pipe configuration referred to as coaxial pipe, (one pipe inside another pipe) the flue gases from the unit are expelled through the inner pipe to the outside of the home, and the combustion air is drawn in through the outer pipe. Direct Vent Fireplaces offer good efficiency because they don't steal heated air from the living space.

2. Will my Fireplace operate during a power outage?

Answer:   Most Luxor gas fireplaces will operate during a power outage; our standard units come equipped with a millivolt continuous gas valve and pilot system. (Meaning the power to operate the valve is self generated by the thermopile in the pilot assembly). Unless the installation specifies one of Luxor's optional fan kits, 110 volt A/C power to the fireplace is not even required. Therefore making a luxor gas fireplace an attractive option for home owner looking for a source of heat in the event of a possible power outage.

Luxor gas fireplaces that come equipped with our optional 110 Volt A/C power electronic valve system, (pilot less) come equipped direct from our factory with a battery back up system, so in the event of a power outage, the battery back up system will automatically take over control of the valve, and like the continuous millivolt pilot system the unit will operate as normal.

Please note that 4 AA batteries are required for this system, these batteries should be replaced periodically to ensure that in the event of a power outage your battery have sufficient battery life remaining to operate the system.

3. What fuels will my Luxor gas fireplace operate on?

Answer:   All Luxor gas fireplaces are shipped from the factory capable to either burn natural gas or liquid propane. If the unit is ordered direct from the factory to burn a specific fuel, we will manufacture as specified, in the event that the units need to be converted from one fuel to the other in the field, a very simple and inexpensive natural gas to liquid propane or vise versa conversion kit is readily available. Contact your local dealer for further information, or if no local dealer is available contact the factory direct.

4. Can I turn my pilot off in the summer or when my gas fireplace is not in use?

Answer:   I f you have purchased a Luxor gas fireplace with our continuous millivolt pilot system, you can chose to turn the pilot light off during non use, it is very easy to relight the continuous pilot system if your Luxor gas fireplace is called into service. (Please refer to the gas fireplace lighting instruction in the valve control compartment of the unit.)

If you have purchased a Luxor gas fireplaces that came equipped with our optional 110 volt A/C power electronic valve system, (pilot less) with a battery back up system, when you call the unit into service, simple either turn up your thermostat or on/off switch, the pilot light will automatically light, once the pilot light is stable, which should only take a few second the main heating burner will ignite.

5. There is a white film on the glass door, log set, brick or the inside of the fireplace, what is it?

Answer:   When the unit is first installed, bi products used during the manufacturing process, such as solvents, silicones etc are used, as these products cure from the heat from the fireplace operating some deposits may occur. Also most fuels whether natural gas of liquid propane will produce some bi products and over time these bi products can and will deposit. Cleaning your Luxor gas fireplace should be included in your regular scheduled maintenance program.

6. My millivolt continuous gas valve and pilot system does not stay lit and or extinguishes prematurely, how I can correct this.

Answer:    The most common cause of pilot failure in a continuous pilot system is either a weak pilot from lack of gas pressure, or the gas supply tube to the pilot is either blocked, pinched or broken, or the pilot aeration holes are plugged causing the pilot to become weak. This would indicate that your Luxor gas fireplace should be serviced by a qualified gas fireplace service provider.

7. My Luxor gas fireplace has either a very blue or very yellow flame, is it adjustable?

Answer:   All Luxor gas fireplaces come equipped with an adjustable air shutter to control the amount of air mixture to the burner. The more air that the burner receives in the gas to air ratio in the venture tube the more bluer the burner flame effect will be, the downside of having to much air to the burner is a small unnatural wood looking burner effect. As the adjustable air shutter is closed and the air to gas ratio decreases and the burner receives less air the more yellow the flame will become, it is very important to find a happy medium, to blue looks unnatural for a wood fire, but too yellow can cause the unit to soot, marking the inside of your Luxor gas fireplace with unattractive soot marks as well as possibly transferring to the outside of your home through the co-axial vent pipe leaving a black soot mark.

This adjustment should be done upon installation and by a qualified fireplace service or installation professional.
